Sand trap, the rough, a water feature? When the golfers I work with, tell me that they aren’t focusing on ____________ I know we need to go to work. “So you’re not focusing on it but acutely aware of it, right?” Right!
Or as Shakespeare says… “Methinks thou dost protest overmuch.”
If it’s on your radar-you are aware of it and it WILL be a problem for you, no matter how hard you try to push it away. In fact in an ironic twist, it will actually bring it more to your awareness the harder you push. And it’s very typical that your ball will head right in that direction. I learned this trick from Jasmina Kovacev, she asks, “Are you aware of anything in particular ahead of you?” If so, tap on it. If not, more questions. And here’s where a good practitioner can earn their weight in golf balls. Right there on the course, they can ask you about specifics, (bushes, carts, sand traps), and anything that pops up-work on it with you.
It’s not something you need to do at every hole. But if you tap about obstacles before you go out, then tap on the course, you’ll find that you need it less and less.
